DirectoryAmbient Strand Woven Bamboo Flooringby Eric, April 1, 2008
My wife and I had a mix of strand woven carbonized installed in our Master bedroom, hall, LR, DR, powder room and foyer. We absolutely love the look of the product. It's received lots of compliments from friends. This is a sustainable product and assuming that it is shipped from China by sea it's arguable that the green value compared to other non-sustainable wood products is positive, on the East Coast.
Our installer was not aware of the requirements of the density of the wood on the installation process, so he went through about 100 sq feet of flooring before realizing he needed to re-tool. Be sure to read the detailed instructions and verify that your installer is aware of the possible issues!
Within 1 day, as was pointed out above, we realized that the finish is HIGHLY vulnerable to scratching from plastic or just about anything with a slight edge. The scratches are whites and almost impossible to hide without a touch up paint or dye. This was a real disappointment because we read so much about fantastic durability. Supposedly the product can be refinished but certainly not in the same way one can do spot repairs on a conventional hardwood floor. I'm not sure why so few reviews have noted this or claimed it as an issue.
Given the difficulty and increased cost of installation and relative fragility of the finish, I would not install this product if I had it to do over. I much prefer 100 year old heart pine in my kitchen - it looks as good, of course, and the durability is in another class.
